LETTERS
After my father died, our family received hundreds of letters from well-wishers, from politicians, from famous golfers, from successful businessmen, from kids, from caddies, from people from every walk of life. Here is one from Barbara Nicklaus, addressed to my mother.
Dear Penta,
We just wanted you to know how shocked and sorry we were about Davis, and to let you know that we’ll be thinking of you.
He touched so many lives in such a wonderful way, and he certainly will be missed.
Our love and prayers are with you in the difficult days ahead.
With love and sincere sympathy,
Jack and Barbara Nicklaus and family
This was a letter my mother received from a teenage boy who lived on Sea Island named Kipp Bankston, whom my father helped with his golf swing as a favor, because he saw how much the boy liked the game.
Dear Mrs. Love,
I was deeply hurt by the tragic death of your husband. Mr. Love and yourself have always been especially kind to Mike and I. I have and always will feel that Mr. Love was a very extraordinary man. I believe he has earned the respect and love of everyone who knew him.
Love,
Kipp
This letter was from Pete Davison, who was an assistant to my father at the Atlanta Country Club. Pete today runs the entire TPC golf club network for the PGA Tour.
Dear Penta,
I know this has been an extremely difficult time for you and the boys. However, I hope there has been some solace in the outpouring of affection that everyone has shown for Davis and your family.
I wanted you to know that Davis has had the biggest influence on my life professionally of all of the people I have known in the golf business. He helped teach me the business and the standards and values that go along with being a golf professional. For years, every time I was faced with a problem I would ask myself, “How would Davis handle this?” There is no one that I had more respect and admiration for than Davis Love, Jr. I will miss him tremendously.
I want to offer my help with anything that you may need and, in particular, that Mark or young Davis may need. If Mark ever needs advice or help in golf, the golf business, school, or any related way, please allow me to help shape his future. You know I think the world of Davis III and would be happy to offer my services anytime he needs someone to talk to or someone to help him.
We all love you and the boys and suffer with you in this time of grief.
Warmest regards,
Pete Davison
This letter, again to my mother, was from Mr. Penick, written by hand and with great care, both in his antique penmanship and in the words he selected.
Dear Penta:
It was such a shock when we were called about Davis. He was one of my favorites. Helen joins me in our prayers. He will probably be teaching in Heaven.
I have not only had back problems, but I have shingles; my excuse for the poor handwriting.
